An Anthology of Occasional Pieces, Pt. Eight
Simon Rackham
(to be released on 21st Feb) Music composed between 1988 and 2026. ‘The Blue You’ was composed on 22nd May 1990 and first performed by Helen Ottaway. I found ‘Of Unknown Provenance’ in a pile of pieces but with no title, so it’s become this. It was composed in the late 80’s or early 1990s for two pianos, and I recently wrote additional material for it. ‘For Eve’ was composed in 1988 while I was at the Royal Academy of Music and performed in a workshop there with dancers from the London Contemporary Dance School. It was played by Eve Egoyan to whom it is dedicated. ‘Four Minutes Thirty Three Seconds and a Bit’ was composed on 21st June 2000 as a tribute to John Cage. I’ve reworked it for this recording. ‘Joining The Dots’ was composed in January 2026 for solo piano. ‘Small Things’ is a set of ten small pieces composed in July 1996 and dedicated to Paola. ‘A Nice Little Tune’ was composed on 15th Jan 2001. ‘Titled’ was composed on 10th Oct 2003. ‘Something Missing’ consists of five small pieces composed in December 1990. ‘A Competitor Prepares’ was composed in 1989 and first performed by Helen Ottaway as part of the series ‘Motors, The Golden Picture Book.’ ‘Ecumenical Music for Timothy Verdon,’ was composed on January 22nd 2026 for piano three hands. The top part plays in five eight while the other parts play in three four. On the same day Mons. Timothy Verdon, an acclaimed art historian inaugurated the new Ecumenical chapel in The Basilica di San Lorenzo, Florence.
