‘A Small Selection of Cheeses,’ was composed in 1988 while I was a student at the Royal Academy of Music and first performed there in a concert on the 5th May by fellow student Ed Cremo. John Miller did a piano improvisation and Laurence Crane performed some of his piano pieces with the title 'The piano is dead but the beat lives on.' At the time I was moving into composing more minimal music, but these pieces retain some older habits like a wide range of dynamics and tempo changes that I gradually eliminated almost entirely in later works. ‘Fond Memories of Carlo’ was composed in November 2025 in memory of Carlo Meccoci. ‘A Diatonic Song,’ was composed in 2001 and is a very quiet single line using the only notes of the C major scale. ‘A Free Hand,’ was composed in 2002 and is dedicated to Paola. The piece was meant to have an improvised top line but looking at the piece in December 2025 I decide to compose a top line. All the music on this album was put into the computer using MuseScore notation software, as ‘Finale’ which I’ve used for years is no longer working.
